Sponsored Artist Spotlight: Paul of Moth and Mandala
This week, we’re featuring Paul, the artist behind @mothandmandalalincoln.
Paul creates incredibly clean and professional black-and-grey tattoo work, with a strong focus on geometric detail, precision linework, and balanced compositions. What stands out immediately is the presentation of his tattoos, which reflects how detail-focused and consistent he is as an artist.
About the Artist: Paul
Paul originally started tattooing while working in education. At first, he simply wanted to explore what tattooing was like without necessarily planning to make it a full-time career.
Very quickly, however, his passion for tattooing grew. He spent his spare time practising, watching videos, learning techniques, and gaining support and advice from other artists within the industry.
After around a year, Paul realised his passion for tattooing was strong enough to leave his career in education and fully commit to pursuing tattooing professionally.
Traditional Japanese tattooing was his main influence in the beginning, although with time he developed experience across multiple tattoo styles.
Paul believes that exploring different tattoo styles helps artists develop a wider range of skills and influences the way they approach their work. Today, his tattoos combine detailed geometric designs, clean black and grey work, and precise dotwork techniques.
Paul’s Favourite Tattoo Products
Paul’s current must-have tattoo setup focuses on precision, consistency, and reliably healed results.
One of his essential tools is the Critical Torque machine, known for delivering smooth and consistent performance during longer sessions.
For ink, Paul relies on Dynamic Triple Black, a trusted black tattoo ink popular with artists for its deep saturation, strong black pigment, and strong healed contrast.
He also uses Apex Cartridges, especially for geometric and dotwork tattooing where precision matters. For his typical dotwork setup, Paul regularly works with:
- 0805RL
- 1005RL
- 1223RM
These configurations help support detailed linework, controlled dotwork shading, and smooth black and grey transitions.

About Geometric Black and Grey Tattooing
Paul specialises in black and grey geometric tattooing with detailed dotwork and precision linework.
When geometric tattoo work is well executed, it speaks for itself. Precision is extremely important in this style, especially when it comes to proportions, symmetry, clean lines, and balanced compositions.
Paul brings these elements to life through his careful and consistent approach, creating tattoos that feel clean, bold, and visually striking.
People are drawn to geometric and black and grey tattoos because they create a strong visual impact. The balance, patterns, and detail work make every tattoo feel artistic and unique.
What Tools Are Usually Used for Geometric Tattoos?
Geometric tattooing relies heavily on precision, so artists usually work with carefully selected tools that support clean execution and consistency.
Needles
Round liners (RLs), round shaders (RSs), and round magnums (RMs) are commonly used for precise lines, smooth black and grey shading, and dotwork techniques.
Black Tattoo Ink
High-quality black inks are essential for achieving strong contrast, smooth healed results, and consistent saturation throughout detailed geometric pieces.
Stencil & Preparation
A great stencil is extremely important for geometric tattooing because precision is key. Clean stencil placement helps maintain symmetry, spacing, and accuracy throughout the tattoo process.
Other Supplies
Reliable cartridges, quality tattoo machines, smooth glide products, and dependable stencil solutions all help support clean and professional geometric tattooing.

Common Mistakes in Geometric Tattooing
Poor symmetry
Even small alignment mistakes can become very noticeable in geometric tattoos. Strong stencil placement and careful planning are essential.
Inconsistent linework
Uneven lines can affect the overall flow and balance of the tattoo. Consistent hand speed and quality cartridges help improve precision.
Weak black saturation
Black and grey tattoos rely heavily on contrast. Poor saturation can cause tattoos to heal lighter or patchy.
Rushed dotwork
Dotwork requires patience and consistency. Rushing can make shading appear uneven and reduce the smoothness of gradients.
