Sponsored Artist Spotlight: Iona
This week, we’re featuring Iona (@halfmoon.ink), an artist whose journey reflects determination, creativity, and a genuine passion for tattooing.
From starting her apprenticeship during the uncertainty of the pandemic to building a calm and welcoming private studio environment, Iona has continued to grow her skills while creating a better experience for her clients.
About the Artist: Iona
Iona began tattooing in 2020 while apprenticing at Hysteria Tattoos in Kidlington. It was a challenging time to enter the industry, with repeated closures and re-openings during the pandemic, but those early years gave her a strong foundation, lasting friendships, and valuable guidance from her mentor, Carly of Vixenn Tattoo.
In 2024, after changes at her original studio, Iona continued her career from a private and welcoming studio space, where she has been able to keep growing as an artist while offering clients a calm and comfortable environment.
Iona’s Favourite Tattoo Products
Every artist develops a setup they trust, and Iona’s favourites reflect quality and versatility.
For colour work, her go-to is World Famous Ink, loved for its rich tones, smooth blends, and reliable healed results. She also continues to use Electrum Premium Primer, a stencil product she has trusted since her apprenticeship for clean, long-lasting transfers.
A newer favourite is Apex Cartridges, especially Round Magnums, which are ideal for soft shading, controlled colour packing, and smooth transitions.

About Colour Tattoo Style
Iona’s work reflects a love for custom tattooing with a strong connection to colour, clean execution, and personal design.
Colour tattooing is one of the most expressive tattoo styles, allowing artists to create bold contrast, soft blends, and highly personal designs. Clients often choose colour tattoos because they feel vibrant, individual, and full of life.
What You Need for Colour Tattooing
Beautiful colour work is not only about creativity, but it also depends on using the right tools at the right time. When your setup works with you, it becomes easier to create cleaner tattoos, smoother blends, and a better experience for the client.
Round liners are commonly used for crisp outlines and fine details, helping designs stay sharp and readable. Magnums and Round Magnums are favourites for shading and colour packing because they allow softer blends and smoother coverage with less trauma to the skin.
A high-quality ink can make a huge difference in both application and healed results. Professional ranges such as World Famous Ink are trusted for their strong pigment, smooth flow, and vibrant healed colour, giving artists more confidence while working.

A clear stencil is the roadmap of the tattoo. Products like Electrum Premium Primer help transfers stay clean and visible throughout the session, reducing smudging and making the process easier from the first line to the last.
Cleansing foam, gloves, grip wrap, ink cups, and aftercare products all help create a cleaner, safer, and more professional setup, while also improving comfort for both artist and client.
Common Mistakes in Colour Tattoos
Understanding common mistakes can help artists improve faster and help clients recognise the value of choosing an experienced professional.
Overworking the skin
Going over the same area too aggressively can cause unnecessary trauma, irritation, and slower healing. Healthy skin always gives better healed results.
Weak saturation
If colour is not packed properly, tattoos may heal patchy, faded, or uneven. Solid saturation is what gives colour tattoos their long-lasting impact.
Wrong needle choice
Different stages of the tattoo require different tools. Using the wrong needle grouping can make lines less clean, blending more difficult, and the overall finish less refined.
Rushing blends
Smooth transitions usually take time. Building colour gradually creates softer blends, cleaner depth, and a more polished final piece.
