Artists and Studios

Today our sponsored artist is Danny, a dedicated tattoo artist with over 15 years of experience in the industry. Known for his passion for colour tattoos and always looking to improve and grow his style, Danny has built a loyal client base and a reputation for delivering vibrant, high-quality work.

About the Artist: Danny

Danny’s journey into tattooing started with a deep passion for art from an early age. Although he initially struggled to secure an apprenticeship around 2002 due to limited availability in local studios, he didn’t let that stop him.

He spent years developing his skills using practice skin, fruit, and other unconventional materials before progressing to tattooing on his own skin. During this time, he regularly visited local studios to observe professional artists and learn even more about what he could improve and refine in his technique.

In the early 2010s, Danny opened his first studio, Inline Ink, where he began building his client base while working part-time. As his skills and reputation grew, he transitioned into full-time tattooing. Today, with over 15 years of experience, Danny has cultivated a strong following of loyal clients and has even mentored an apprentice who has gone on to build a successful career.

Recently, Danny opened a new studio called BlackMoth. This space allows him to focus on both his art and maintaining a healthier work-life balance.

While Danny is versatile across multiple tattoo styles, his true passion lies in colour work, “the brighter and more vibrant, the better.”

About the Tattoo Style: Colour Tattoos

Colour tattoos are all about bold, vibrant pigments and making designs really pop on the skin. Compared to black and grey work, colour pieces rely heavily on solid saturation, smooth blends, and strong contrast between shades.

What makes colour work stand out is how alive it feels once it’s healed. Whether it’s punchy primary colours or softer blends and gradients, it adds depth, movement, and personality to a piece.

What Tools and Products Are Used for Colour Tattoos?

Needles

In any standard tattoo session, your core setup stays the same: reliable needles, solid stencil prep, and strict hygiene. For colour work, round liners like 3RL are ideal for clean outlines and fine detail, while magnums are your go-to when you want to shade smoothly and fill in colour without it looking patchy.

Inks

This is where colour tattooing really stands out. The ink is the main focus, and choosing the right pigments makes all the difference. Artists often spend time testing different brands and tones to find what works best for their style. At Tattoo Boutique, you’ll find a wide range of colours inks from trusted brands like World Famous Ink, Eternal Ink, and Dynamic Ink. From bold primary colours like red, blue, and yellow to more subtle tones, having a strong palette is key to achieving vibrant, long-lasting results.

Stencil and Prep

Getting your stencil down clean and prepping the skin properly makes a big difference, especially with detailed colour pieces. Using something like Dynamic Stencil Magic helps your design stay crisp and easy to follow the whole way through the session.

Common Mistakes in Colour Tattooing

One common mistake with colour tattoos is not saturating the colour properly. If you don’t take your time with it, the tattoo can end up looking patchy or fade out quicker than it should.

Another thing we see a lot is picking colours without thinking about how they’ll sit on the skin. Not every colour works the same on every skin tone, and some lighter shades can disappear if they’re not applied right.

And of course, rushing the job or going too hard on the skin can cause problems. It can make healing tougher and affect how the tattoo looks once it’s settled.

Danny’s Favourite Tattoo Products

Now let’s take a look at what Danny has been using recently in his sessions:

  • INKEEZE Glide Tattoo Ointment – one of the most recognised names in the industry, loved for its unique texture and effortless glide. Perfect for artists working through long sessions, it keeps the skin hydrated while allowing your machine to move seamlessly across the surface.
  • Dynamic Stencil Magic – a reliable option for clean, consistent stencil transfers. It helps keep your lines clear and in place throughout the session, so you can focus on the tattoo without needing to reapply.
  • Apex 3RL Cartridges – we always love bringing Apex into the conversation. Developed to deliver high-quality performance and consistency, Apex cartridges are built to give artists confidence throughout the tattoo process. Ideal for clean, sharp linework and detailed work.
